Blogs good, Form replies bad

So I went and did The Right Thing - y’all know what I mean - looking up the almost impossible to find “report a bug” link, submitting a fairly well structured and constructive post. And received the usual brick to the head Form Letter reply.

customer subject: Donation button code generator
is broken: 5302

I've documented it at
http://amdsoft.com/2006/07/18/paypal-creating-a-
donate-button-and-error-message-5302-solved/

Your code is generated as:

PKCS7-----
">

The problem is the line break. Fix it to:

PKCS7-----">

and everything works fine.'

Damn, I hate these things. My housemate works in support (not at Paypal) so I must ask him about it sometime, but it appears to me that they have about 3 different form replies and use a magic 8 ball to pick the appropriate one. I look forward to the wonderful, magical day when blogging scales to fulfill all customer service needs. Hey, it might even happen!

Paypal - donate button and error message 5302 solved

The Paypal button I created using the code off their site didn’t work - I was getting this Message 5302 that the world was falling apart or something. Whatever it was, the result was I couldn’t be paid and my goldfish would starve and we can’t have that. So here’s how to fix it.

To create button in the first place, log in to your account, click on the “Merchant Tools” tab and then click on Donations in the “Key Features” box down on the right. Click the “Create Button Now” button down the bottom and you’ll see a page something like this:

Screenshot from paypal site showing your button code

The idea is that you copy and paste this code into a webpage to produce your unique Donate button. Great! But the problem is that if you copy and paste the code exactly as above then more than likely you’ll get a “Message 5302: the kettle is unplugged” error, which is bad. Thankfully, it’s a simple fix.

Change the bit that says

PKCS7-----
">

to say:

PKCS7-----">

or in order words, remove the linebreak. Done!

It’s kinda irritating that it’s such a simple thing. I have emailed PayPal tech support many times now about this error message and got the usual brush-off, d’oh!

If you found this post useful in fixing your 5302 error please leave a comment or even link here with the code <a href=”http://amdsoft.com/”>amd on software</a> which I’d really appreciate :)

Thanks and good luck!

ambatchdotcom seocontest: pointless or educational?

I’m wondering if the ambatchdotcom seocontest is as pointless as it appears. From looking at the google search results for “ambatchdotcom seocontest” it’s obviously that all the well known SEO tactics are out in force.

  • the keywords ambatchdotcom seocontest are spammed all throughout the headings, body and links for relevance bonus. Ok, not quite spammed, but borderline
  • many of the sites are blogs for the frequently updated bonus
  • urls, particularly domainnames, contain the keywords for relevance bonus (like the guy with his blog at http://ambatchdotcom- seocontest.com/ambatchdotcom-seocontest with a wordpress userid of ambatchdotcom-seocontest)
  • domainnames registered years ago are being used to avoid the sandbox effect
  • many backlinks within the site increase pageranking
  • what many believe is the real winner: external links, hundreds of them, from well ranked sites
  • meta tags
  • … and finally, I believe there’s even a semantic html site in there. I’ll be watching that one.

So, is it really a worthwhile educational contest as ambatchdotcom would have us believe? Well, I’m not convinced. Most of the above is well known, white hat, good seo practice. I believe that once you have the basics covered that there’s not much more you can do. Unless, of course, you’re morally flexible, and willing to go the black-hat route.

Is this an ambatchdotcom seocontest entry?

So, you ask, what about this post? No, I am not entering the seocontest. However, for a mere 5 euro donation to my paypal account I will give you a live external link to your ambatchdotcom seocontest page from this blog entry with the relevant keywords. What a great deal! For a larger amount I will also be happy to link to you from elsewhere - post a comment below.

PR101: do not threaten potential customers

Fantastic effort here by Switchmedia to ensure their good name is tarnished forever more in Ireland. They decided sending legal threats to boards.ie would ensure their reputation is upheld.Of course, pissing off some 50,000 potential customers is not the best PR strategy. This is an era of communication and data retention - the internet does not forget such threats.

It’s too late for Switchmedia. Businesses take note: your conduct is being watched, do not slight the community.

Aftermath

Wow, Katrina sure did some damage. The pictures from Louisiana and Mississipi are astonishing. And this was the downgraded version. What would a Cat. 5 Katrina have done?

Some excerpts from the LA Times-Picayune:

Hurricane Katrina struck metropolitan New Orleans on Monday with a staggering blow, far surpassing Hurricane Betsy, the landmark disaster of an earlier generation. The storm flooded huge swaths of the city, as well as Slidell on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, in a process that appeared to be spreading even as night fell.

A powerful storm surge pushed huge waves ahead of the hurricane, flooding much of St. Bernard Parish and New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward, just as Betsy 40 years ago. But this time the flooding was more extensive, spreading upriver as well to cover parts of the Bywater, Marigny and Treme neighborhoods.

As with Betsy, people scrambled into their attics or atop their roofs, pleading for help from the few passers-by.

The powerful Category 4 storm crossed the coast near the mouth of the Pearl River shortly after daybreak with winds of 135 mph.

Biloxi, MS

Inspecting by helicopter after Hurricane Katrina blasted through New Orleans, it was difficult to make out major city andmarks, the spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency said late Monday.

“I didn’t know it was the airport,” Marty Bahamond, stationed at the New Orleans Emergency Operations Center, said when his pilot pointed out Lakefront Airport, completely under water.

The director of homeland security for New Orleans, said it could be two months before electricity is restored to all of the city.

For now, people who attempt to return to the city will be stopped.

“You will be turned back. Only official emergency personnel will be allowed in. I-10 is completely closed down, no one can go back in and we have to find them a place to stay.”

Those who evacuated should expect to stay away for at least two days.

Remarkably, the Guardian reports that the French Quarter seemed largely untouched:

Neighborhoods outside the Vieux Carre were inundated with up to 15 feet of water. But the old city, built on the highest ground around, weathered the glancing blow from the Category 4 storm in grand style.

Terry Ebbert, chief of homeland security for New Orleans, said the French Quarter appeared to survive Katrina better than any of the city’s neighorhoods.

After the storm passed, police circled the quarter with bullhorns shouting: “The French Quarter is closed. This is state of emergency. Please, please get off the streets or you will be detained.’’

But that couldn’t dampen the indomitable spirit of one of the nation’s most famous - and infamous - neighborhoods.

Tamara Stevens and Rick Leiby found their way to Johnny White’s Sports Bar before the winds even stopped blowing. After spending a harrowing night in their swaying apartment, they needed to be out among people.

Bike needs a clean and service
Some people who thought they were safe after the eye of the storm had long passed got caught out when a levee burst nearby.

Ed Gruber, who lives in the 6300 block of Canal Boulevard, said he became desperate when the rising water chased he, his wife, Helen, and their neighbor Mildred K. Harrison to the second floor of their home. When Gruber saw a boat pass by, he flagged it down with a light, and the three of them escaped from a second-story window.

“The hurricane was scary,” Scott Radish said. “All the tree branches fell, but the building stood. I thought I was doing good. Then I noticed my Jeep was under water.”

The water had risen knee-deep during the storm, but despite the clearing skies, it had continued to rise one brick every 20 minutes, according to Kyle, continuing its ascent well into the night.

“We were good until the Canal busted”

Katrina destruction, Metairie, LA

Katrina’s winds split homes, collapsed buildings and uprooted trees across a vast area. The famous oaks along St. Charles Avenue and its Uptown side streets were shattered. The avenue was made impassable by thickets of downed trees, many entangled with downed utility poles and criss-crossing power lines. Parked cars were smashed; many trees fell onto houses they once shaded.

What’s happening in NOLA

New Orleans, my favourite US city, is somewhere under this:
Hurricane Katrina

I visit there back in ‘99 when on a coast-to-coast road trip (LA to DC, 6480 miles). As my friend and I were driving up the east coast of Florida, we turned to each other simultaneously and said “We have to go back”. So we took a 900 mile detour off course in order to spend another 3 nights. Such a beautiful city, such great, friendly people. I hope it survives.

Update:

From NOLA’s Times-Picayune breaking news:

The roof of the Superdome, where thousands of New Orleans residents have sought refuge from the storm, was damaged and there are reports of water pouring into the building.

The Superdome has no electricity, so in addition to the rain coming in, there is no air-conditioning for the thousands of New Orleanians sheltering there.

And the US military concentrating their efforts positively:

Aircraft are positioned from Hammond to the Texas border ready to fly behind the storm to check damage after it passes over New Orleans, said Maj. Gen. Bennett C. Landreneau, head of the Louisiana National Guard.

Should we A or B? Yes, we should.

I’m wondering if it’s because I’ve programmed too much, but I find it quite funny to give the correct answer of Yes to A or B questions.

“Would you like tea or coffee?”
“Yes” (I would like some tea or some coffee)

“Should I go left or right?”
“Yes” (otherwise you’ll never get there)

Too much programming? Or maybe it’s just cos I’m a pr!ck with a warped sense of humour :)

Movie review: Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

Revenge of the Sith occupied my time yesterday evening - I went along with some geeks (colleagues) and a Star Wars nut (significant other). Personally, I’m an old school sf fanatic, brought up on a diet of Clarke and Asimov, with plenty of Heinlein, Bradbury and Wells thrown into the mix. For example, I’m dreading to see what they’ve done with War of the Worlds (uhh laaah). On the other hand, Starship Troopers and The Fifth Element are some of my favourite films… Anyway, I digress. Let’s just say that my expectations were such that it would be hard to disappoint me (I’m so diplomatic I could make a politician).

And I was not disappointed - Episode III is one of the funniest movies I have seen in years. From the dramatic “You’re so beautiful because I’m so in love with you”, to the fantastic General Grevious Bodily Harm with his 86 light sabers, to the Sith Lord wasting away, to AnnDarth Vader “Noooooooooooooooo<snip>”. But the funniest single line in the film was “You are either with me <dramatic pause> or you are my enemy!”… classic!

I absolutely, thoroughly recommend this movie to any sceptics out there, you will find it wonderfully entertaining. I will be going to see it again (and I’m under orders to take it more seriously this time…)!

Live long and prosper!
- May the Force be with you!
